I chose the name Desert Sage Counseling with intention and meaning. The sagebrush plant grows resiliently in Idaho—able to thrive in the challenging environment of the arid high desert of Southern Idaho. This connection to nature symbolizes strength, adaptability, and growth even in the face of hardship, much like the people here who demonstrate a unique strength and persistence that I deeply admire.
Additionally, many cultures associate sage with wisdom, clarity, and healing—qualities that reflect the counseling process. My goal is to offer a grounded, supportive space where individuals, couples, and families can find valuable guidance, grow through life’s difficulties, and reconnect with their own inner strength and resilience.
My Name is Kami Roach and I am the owner of Desert Sage Counseling. I opened Desert Sage Counseling in 2024 as a way expand my career and how I give to my community and the mental health profession. I want to give you a little background on how I started Desert Sage Counseling, because my own growth and ability to give back is due to the amazing teachers and mentors I have had throughout my life that have helped me become the person and professional that I am.
I grew up in a small community here in Idaho with great, supportive parents, teachers, and coaches that did their best to help mold me despite every defiant remark I threw back at them. Thankfully some of the things they taught me did stick around and sink in as I experienced more and more. My first "real job" was at the College of Southern Idaho Challenge Course, which has led to 10 years of experience facilitating team building events based in experiential learning. This job turned into a love for helping people grow through fun, connection, and challenging experiences and played a large role in my decision to become a counselor.
I have had a variety of job experiences prior to getting to Desert Sage Counseling; challenge course facilitator, paraprofessional, medical assistant, school counselor, etc., but the the experience I want people to know about most is working at Aspen Grove Family Therapy. I started as a counselor at Aspen Grove Family Therapy in 2021. Dr. Whitehead hired me knowing I was struggling at my previous job and not knowing much about me. He brought me into a culture and community at Aspen Grove Family Therapy that I didn't know was possible; one that has helped me be more growth-minded, passionate, and collaborative in how I practice as a mental health professional.
Opening Desert Sage Counseling is an exciting next step in my growth as a mental health professional and member of a variety of larger systems that I can give back to. I hope to use this business as a platform to spread the culture, growth, collaboration, and knowledge I have benefited from at Aspen Grove Family Therapy and from Dr. Whitehead's mentorship!
